Blackjack Winning Strategies

Blackjack is quite possibly the most popular casino game, both online and in brick and mortar establishments.  If 21 is your forte, here are some ideas to make your play more profitable, and therefore more fun.

Blackjack

Blackjack has built in a house edge, due to the fact that the dealer gets to act after the player.  Therefore, if the gambler busts, the dealer wins without having to make any decisions.  Even if the player does not bust, the dealer still knows what they need to beat before doing anything.

With such powerful advantages on the side of the house, what can you do to shift the odds to a somewhat more favorable position?

First, get a strategy chart.  They are available all over the internet for free, and tell you exactly what to do with every card combination you can have versus whatever the dealer has been showing.

Second, and more important than getting the chart, however, is to live by it religiously.  The entire game is right there for you, with the best decision possible in every scenario the game can throw at you.

If you find yourself playing blackjack and without access to your trusty chart, and you have not yet memorized it, there are three basic rules that can save you despite not having been prepared ahead of time.

No. 1: Give the Dealer a Chance to Bust

After you know you do not have that magical Blackjack combination of Ace-10, you have to play strategy.  If the dealer is showing a 4, 5, or 6, do not hit unless you have a total of 11 or lower and cannot possibly go bust regardless of what you receive.  If the dealer busts, you make money.

No. 2: Do Not Hit High Hard Hands

Let’s say you are staring down the barrel of a 16, and the dealer is showing a 7.  It is statistically more probable that the dealer’s hidden card has a point value of less than 10.  It is also true that there are more cards worth 10 in the shoe than any other single number.  If you rap the table and force the dealer to take the mandatory hit on the likely total of 16 or lower they are holding, you have given yourself the best odds to win the scenario.

No. 3: Aces and 8′s Always Get Split, 10′s and 6′s Stay Together

An ace is powerful.  Two aces equal 12. Split them up and go for Blackjack, twice.  Two 8′s total up to 16, the worst hand in the game.  A pair of 18′s is quite strong, so try to get there.  10′s are too powerful to split, so take your chances to win with a 20.  Split 6′s can end up as two hands of 16 each, a nightmare for any Blackjack aficionado.

With these very basic tips, you are well prepared to go out and tackle a game with a very player-friendly house edge of 45%.  Enjoy!
