Casino Basic Skills – Baccarat

Baccarat, otherwise known as Punto Banco, is a game originating from Italy and has been played by Aristocrats and Royalty since the late 15th Century. Even today it is still regarded as a sophisticated and elegant game bycasino baccarat many players. Usually situated in a separate area within the casino, it is played by as many as 14 players, with three dealers, on tables very similar to those of the game of Craps, using  6 or 8 decks of cards which are dispensed from boxes known as shoes. Players take turns in dealing, (although sometimes a casino dealer will deal instead); however, a player may choose not to deal and instead pass the shoe on to the player next to him. Players have to place their bets before the cards are dealt.

It is possible to bet either on the player (Punto) or the bank (Banco), with the dealing player usually betting on Banco. There may be the opportunity for a Standoff bet, however, this is done only on rare occasions. Bets have to be placed on either the hand which was dealt to Banco or the one dealt to Punto winning, similar to the betting on red or black in roulette. As the odds on Banco winning have been proven to be greater than those for Punto, a Banco win will incur a 5% commission charge for the winning player. If Banco wins, the shoe remains with the same player who has dealt the last hand, when it moves on to the player next in line if Punto is the winning hand.

Each hand will consist of either two or at most three cards. Two cards are placed face down -usually under the shoe – by the dealer, and two cards are given – also face down – to whichever player has placed the highest bet on Punto. After taking a look at his hand, this player then returns his cards to the dealer, who will then turn both hands over.

A casino dealer will now declare the winner – the hand which scores the highest. Should one of the hands add up to a total of 8 or 9, a natural is declared and no more cards will be dealt. In the case of either one or both of the hands totalling 7 or below, the dealer chooses whether to deal a third card. The value of each card is as follows: aces are counted as 1, 2 – 9 are counted at their face value and 10, as well as picture cards, have a value of 0. If the total comes to more than 9, the left digit will be discarded; for instance a 7 and a 9 would total 16, but for the final score it would only count as a 6.

Once all required cards have been dealt, the hand holding the highest total is the winner and the official casino dealer, not the regular player who has dealt, will collect from the losing bets and pay out the winners.
